Convicted Australian drug trafficker Cassie Sainsbury has been released from a Colombian prison less than three years into her six-year sentence, her lawyer has confirmed. Ms Sainsbury, a former personal trainer from Adelaide, was jailed in November after being arrested at Bogota's El Dorado international airport in April that year with 18 packages of cocaine stashed in her luggage. In an excerpt of an interview with Channel Nine's 60 Minutes program posted on social media, Sainsbury said she had "grown up" during her time in jail. Sainsbury was 22 at the time of her arrest and was stopped while trying to smuggle 5. She was initially facing up to 21 years in prison, but had her sentenced reduced to six years after a judge accepted a plea deal.

Cassandra Sainsbury 'reaches plea deal' in Colombia over cocaine charges
Drug smuggler Cassandra Sainsbury has been sentenced to a maximum of six years in prison under a plea deal approved by a Colombian judge, her lawyer says. Herran said he intends to appeal against the fine as Sainsbury is unable to pay it, AAP reported. He said it was most probable that she would serve her sentence in Colombia. The time she has spent in El Buen Pastor Good Shepherd women's prison - close to seven months - will count towards her total sentence, he said. The sentence might be reduced if she continues to teach English in prison, and given her record of good behaviour.
