Asian music takes centre stage at Symphony Hall on May 2 with an inaugural awards to honour the top artists in everything from Bhangra to indi-pop, urban-Asian to Asian fusion. The Brit Asia TV Music Awards are the first ones to be organised by the Birmingham-based Brit Asia TV channel, which for the past two years has been trying to shine a spotlight on the diversity within the Asian music scene. We opened the doors to them and gave them a platform. The formula seems to be working. Certainly the demand will be there if the success of Jay Sean, the artist who garnered most of the award nominations, is anything to go by. The Harlsden-born singer-songwriter, rapper, beatboxer and record producer capped success in the UK charts by last year becoming the first South Asian solo artist and the first UK urban act to top the Billboard Hot with his debut single Down.
Eastern Eye has the longest running South Asian music pages in the world and has pretty much featured every artist in the last 30 years, from aspiring singers to global superstars. But, the beating heart of the pages has always been British talent that has crossed new musical frontiers in diverse genres. British Asian music has collectively delivered landmark moments, which have blazed a trail for others, created history, been inspirational or just super awesome. To mark the th issue of the Eastern Eye , the team went back through the last 30 years since its inception to find a memorable musical moment for each year. And yes there were so many more.
The awards show has been produced and broadcast by B4U Music since They were held on March 6, at the Aquarium nightclub in London. B4U Music broadcast two exclusive versions during prime time slots in 80 countries over the Christmas period. The freshest most innovative and exciting sounds this year have come from the Asian club world.
